For continuity and the benefit of your child, our courses run in 10-14 week blocks, which are payable in advance, prior to the start of the course. It is possible to join us in the middle of a course, depending on space.

We teach in progressive stages, which are developmentally appropriate for your child's ability.

We teach according to the the Swim England Pre-School Framework which is about building the beginnings of a lifelong love of water.

Every child should be given a chance to learn to swim and feel like they are comfortable and able to do so in any situation.

We believe that the first experiences during a child’s early years, of water and the pool environment, should be positive, fun and memorable.

The key focus areas of the Pre-School Framework are:

Giving children confidence from the word go
Teaching the core skills needed to learn the four strokes through fun and games
The Pre-School Framework is about helping to support younger, less independent swimmers, pre-school children and babies.

It also caters for toddlers, helping to keep them motivated if they are struggling with building water confidence.

One of the ways to help keep them motivated is a range of bright Awards with fun and friendly characters to reward them as they progress. To find out more about all Swim England Awards go to their Awards section here.

These Swim England Pre-School Framework Awards are perfect for babies from birth (subject to Health Visitor advice being followed). They are also perfect for pre-school children who are new to swimming.

Usually parents or carers will attend swimming lessons with their babies or young children and join them in the water. This helps to provide reassurance for the child and gives the parent or carer confidence in assisting their child in the water.

Four separate Awards are available which begin with an introduction to the water and swimming environment through fun and games.

These Swim England Pre-School Framework Awards are a natural follow on from the Discovery Duckling Awards. They are aimed at children who are old enough to follow instructions and can move on their own.

They give the child more independence and start to build their confidence in water. These Awards are used to slowly build up the child ready for the Learn to Swim Framework Stages 1-7.

Again these lessons will usually be given as an adult and child lesson, where both are in the water. They could also be held with small groups of children and teaching assistants in the water.

These are a set of nine Awards for the Swim England Pre-School Framework Awards to complement the Duckling and Discovery Duckling Awards. They can be achieved at any time, at any point in the Learn to Swim Programme. They help to motivate young children, lifting their confidence and giving them targets to achieve during the early stages of learning to swim.

The Awards are made up of the following:

Enter the water safely
Jump in
Float on my front
Float on my back
Roll over
Blow bubbles
Enter, turn, return
Exit safely

We use the Swim England's (formerly Amateur Swimming Association (ASA)) National Plan for teaching swimming template current edition (NPTS), as part of our teaching program.

The NPTS is a comprehensive and progressive teaching program upon sound technical and educational principles.

Swim England is the national governing body for swimming throughout England. Visit the Swim England website.

The Discovery Duckling Awards are the start of the learn to swim experience for all children.

These awards are perfect for babies and toddlers and pre-school children who are new to swimming lessons.

Ideal for gaining water confidence while staying close to adult support, these awards are followed on by the existing Duckling Awards.

The Discovery Duckling Awards 1-4 each have their own certificate, badge and sticker.

This is the foundation phase of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS).

The foundation phase consists of five awards called Duckling Awards & the Adult & Child Award; these awards are designed to equip your child in basic water confidence at a young age before they are introduced to group lessons.

The Duckling Awards are designed to help babies and toddlers explore and enjoy the fun of learning to swim. With the help of their parents/carers, the Duckling Awards support the National Plan for Teaching Swimming and help to develop and boost confidence of very young children, both in and out of the water.

Children participating in both these awards should be at least five months old and have completed his/her triple injection. The child must be accompanied by an adult while in the water (less than 1.5m deep), during teaching sessions and the test.

Adults and carers continue to accompany and support the child throughout each session and the child is rewarded at each stage with bright and colourful Awards. Buoyancy aids (including armbands, floats or a SwimFin etc) can be used in the first four grades as the child learns how to float and gets used to being in the water.
